Daily Star - Exhibitions show off potential of young offenders
There is much more to young offenders than their convictions, a pair of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) demonstrated on Monday with the opening of two Beirut exhibitions of artwork created by just such adolescents. The Fondation Pere Afif Osseiran held a one-day exposition at UNESCO Palace under the patronage of former Minister Leila Solh Hamadeh, which coincided with the opening of a handicrafts exhibition by juvenile and women prisoners by Mouvement Social.

Families hope reconciliation will see them reunited with loved ones
It was the summer of 1982 when Zahira Najjar, 66, last saw her son Abdallah, then 17 years old. The family was in Bhamdoun, a mountain resort east of Beirut, at the height of Lebanon's 15-year Civil War. Only Syrian forces were on the ground when Abdullah went to find transport to the capital to get his wounded leg seen to, Najjar said.
She has seen and heard nothing of him since. (...)

البلد - يبدأ الجيش الاميركي في شباط 2009 تسليم المعتقلين الى العراق
التحالف سيسلم في 15 كانون الاول الــجــاري الدفعة الاولـــى من ملفات المعتقلين الــى الحكومة العراقية لتقوم بدراستها". واضاف "نظرا للمعلومات التي في حوزتها ومذكرات التوقيف، لدى الحكومة العراقية مهلة 45 يوما لكي تتخذ قرارا بشأن المعتقلين الذين ستفرج عنهم واولئك الذين ستنقلهم الى سجونها اعتبارا من الاول من شباط" 2009. ويقبع 15800 معتقل في معسكرين تديرهما قوات التحالف هما فــكــتــوري قــرب مــطــار بغداد وبوكا قرب البصرة. واكد كانتوك "سنسلم الحكومة العراقية مطلع كــل شهر 1500 ملف الــى حين اخلاﺀ المعتقلات بشكل تام من كل المعتقلين الذين سيكون مصيرهم امــا الافـــراج عنهم او نقلهم الى سجون العراق".

The UN and human rights organizations celebrated on Wednesday the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which coincided with Human Rights Day, celebrated annually on December 10. The Universal Declaration, a short document of 30 articles, was signed on December 10, 1948, and is recognized as the most translated document in the world. It stipulates that all civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights were the right of every individual "without distinction of any kind, such as race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion."

Daily Star : UNESCO taps media to bolster youth policy
BEIRUT: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) office in Beirut invited the Lebanese press on Friday to a workshop on formulating national youth policy. The workshop, entitled "Role of the Media in the Nation Youth Policy Formulation in Lebanon" and held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Beirut, was to sensitize the media on "the importance of having a national youth policy," said program coordinator of the project Rindala Abdel-Baki.

Quatre soldats et dix prisonniers blessés dans un accident
Deux véhicules relevant de la brigade pénitentiaire ont dérapé, après avoir percuté des garde-fous en ciment, sur la route internationale Beyrouth-Damas au niveau de Kahalé. L’accident a fait quatorze blessés : dix prisonniers et quatre membres de la troupe. Deux des soldats ainsi que les dix prisonniers blessés ont été transportés à l’hôpital al-Hayat.
Dix autres prisonniers sont sortis indemnes de l’accident. Ils ont été transférés à la prison de Roumié.
